Cervus Athletics

Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.

Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.

We focus primarily on making our athletes as strong as they can be. Don’t confuse strength with power. Strength is about creating bigger muscles. Bigger muscles move their bodyweight easier. Then we focus on buidling their power, which is teaching them to move those bigger muscles quicker. Our athletes are both strong and powerful. This combination is the key to becoming a great athlete.

Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.

Endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.

Another common misconception is that speed and endurance are the same thing. While they work together to create a well-rounded athlete, one can easily point to the sport of football, with attention to the offensive/defensive lines as compared to a punt returner, to realize that speed and endurance are vastly different characteristics.  One can move quickly in short bursts, the other can move quickly for an extended period of time. The same comparison can also be made to sprinters and distance runners in Track & Field. At CrossFit Cervus we train both speed and endurance.

Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.

Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.

Balance – The ability to control the placement of the body’s center of gravity in relation to its support base.

Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.

You can’t be an athlete without the above characteristics. The good news is all of these are able to be taught. It just takes time, dedicated focus, and practice. We employ a vast array of skill sessions and drills to improve our athletes’ overall athleticism.

Flexibility – The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.

We teach our athletes how to properly warm-up and stretch so that their bodies are prepared for the tasks at hand. This translate into a healthy body for their respective sports, greatly reducing the risk of in-season injuries. The health and safety of your athlete is of the utmost importance to Cervus.

How we build great athletes

Practice, practice, and more practice. We train hard but we drill harder. Our athletes are taught the movements from Day 1 with constant emphasis on technique. Not only does perfect technique make you a better athlete, it allows you to move more weight which in turn makes you stronger, but more importantly it keeps you safe. Practice, practice, and more practice.
